Hockey coach Maurits Hendriks

Maurits Gijsbreght Hendriks, born on 1 January 1961, is an internationally schooled hockey coach from the Netherlands. He started life as a student in Law and Communication, but soon realised that his interests were more focused on sports and coaching. As twin-tiger he left the country and found that while away, his interests in coaching and training developed even more. During his travels he visited various sporting events and this grew his passion for the profession.

On his return to the Netherlands, his career as a hockey coach took off at first division Amsterdam. In 1995, he moved across from HCG in Wassenaar and the following year he took this team to winning the First Division National title. This success led to a new challenge as Assistant National Coach alongside Roelant Oltmans. Together they won gold at the Atlanta Olympic Games. In 1998, Roelant made way for Maurits. As National Coach Maurits again won gold at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

After this success Maurits found his place as Technical Director of the Spanish Hockey Federation which was soon followed by his role as National Coach for this team. He was able to raise their team spirit to a higher level and to once again achieve outstanding results. His achievements included winning the Champions Trophy in 2004 and de European title in 2005. He finalized his career in Spain after winning a Silver Medal at the EK in 2007.

In 2012 at the London Olympics Hendriks held the position of Chef de Mission. His figure head at these games was to strive for optimum preparation as well as motivation of the athletes. He also carried out this same role again at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi. Maurits was Chef de Mission for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Games & Performance Director TeamNL till April 2022. Nowadays he’s the Chief Sport Officer of AFC Ajax.
